About Kay

Dr Kay Barnard is a Bristolian, born and raised in the city.

With a Ph.D. in bio-chemistry, Kay started her career in international medical research. After a posting at the prestigious M.I.T. in the USA, she came back to work at Bristol University. This included working as a Research Fellow for the National Kidney Fund. She then moved into her family business which employed 25 people and helped reshape it into a leader in environmental management. She set up a large, successful wetland site in Somerset.

Kay received an International Development M.Sc. in 2011 from Bristol University and now works to develop new markets for farmers in Africa, reducing their reliance on foreign aid and support. She has recently helped to write a major international report on how to make farming and food production in Africa more Climate Smart (green).

She was recently appointed to the board of a well-known medical charity in the city. Kay also advises on Research Ethics in the NHS, to make sure that patients are clearly told about the risks and benefits of taking part in research and are treated with respect. She is currently acting-chair of an organisation working to build bridges with the minority ethnic groups in the city.

Experience in managing large organisations: Kay was a member of the governors of the University of Bristol for many years, taking an active role with personnel management and staff development. She also spent 4 years as a non-executive director of an NHS Primary Care Trust, with particular responsibility for clinical governance and staff performance.
